Commencement Speaker Application

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation from the University of California, San Diego.  As a graduate of UCSD and Eleanor Roosevelt College, you will join a long list of distinguished and notable individuals.

As a Summer 2022, Fall 2022, Winter 2023 or Spring 2023 graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt College, you have the opportunity to apply and audition to be the Student Commencement Speaker.  This honor is bestowed upon only one student per year.  Guidelines for applicants and speech submissions are as follows:

  • Eligible students will only be those students graduating by Spring 2022 as determined by your Degree and Diploma Application (DDA).
  • Applications must be submitted online no later than Friday, April 21, 2023. Late applications will not be accepted. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Applicants selected to audition will be contacted by Monday, April 24, 2023. Applicants must audition to be selected as the speaker; exceptions will not be made.
  • Speech should be between 3-5 minutes long.
  • One speaker will be selected by mid May and must be available to speak at the ERC Commencement Ceremony.

Speeches for the Student Commencement Speaker should reflect experiences at Eleanor Roosevelt College. Topics and areas to address may include: commonalities among your graduating class (MMW, living on campus, commuting to campus); a reflection on the role of multiculturalism in your college experience; studying/traveling abroad; the philosophy and mission of ERC and the impact it has made on your college experience; or the transition for students as they progress from UCSD to the larger world.
