Entry Level Writing Requirement

The University of California requires all undergraduates, including international students, to demonstrate a minimum proficiency in English composition.  To demonstrate proficiency, you can submit proof of one of the following to the UCSD Admissions Office:

  • Score 680 or higher on the SAT-II Reasoning Test (Writing Section)
  • Score 3 or higher on the English Composition and Literature or English Language and Composition Advanced Placement exam
  • Achieve a minimum score on the ACT (English and Writing Section).
  • Score 5, or higher on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level English exam. OR Score a 6 or higher on the Standard Level English exam.
  • Submit proof of completion, prior to enrollment at UC San Diego, of an acceptable transferable college credit English composition course with a grade of C or higher.
Otherwise you must pass the Analytical Writing Placement examination.  The Analytical Writing Placement Exam is administered statewide on Saturday, May 11th, 2012 and at UCSD in the Fall Quarter.  This test may be taken only once.  For locations and more details, please see: http://basicwriting.ucsd.edu.
