Living On-Campus
What if my student does not get along with his/her roommates?
The first step is to ask your student if he or she has spoken with his or her roommate or apartment-mate about the problem (e.g. cleaning, noise, etc.). It may be that your student is complaining to you and has never brought up the problem with the roommate. If he or she has not spoken to the roommate or apartment-mate, encourage him or her to talk with the roommate or apartment-mate about a possible solution. If he or she feels uncomfortable approaching the roommate, he or she can go to the Resident Advisor (RA) for assistance. RAs are trained to assist residents in working through roommate conflicts. If the problem persists after the RA has been involved, the Residence Life professional staff can assist in a resolution. As a last resort, the student may be permitted to move to another room or apartment. Moving to another space depends upon availability and cannot be guaranteed.
Part of our goal in helping students learn to communicate with their roommates about problems is to assist them in developing skills for when they live off campus. While living off campus, your student will not have an RA or residence life staff for assistance. Usually students will not bring up a problem until it is so pervasive or consistent that they feel the only option is to move out of the room. Encourage them to bring up problems with their roommates when they first arise, which will often end in a speedy and simple resolution.
Can my student have an overnight guest? May I stay with my student in their room/apartment?
Students may have guests stay overnight for up to three days with prior discussion and approval of their roommates. We encourage you to let your student make the decision of whether or not you should stay with them or find off-campus accommodations for short visits. Make sure that they have discussed these decisions with their room/suitemates or apartment-mates first.
When should my student start looking for housing next year and where is helpful information available?
Information about living on campus for the following year will become available in February. Information is sent to the student's mailbox at their on-campus residence. There is also information available at the Housing website at
http://hds.ucsd.edu. If your student is interested in living off campus, the Off-Campus Housing office at UC San Diego recom-mends that students start looking for off-campus housing four to six weeks before they are ready to move. A list of frequently asked questions, resources, and housing listings is available at
http://offcampushousing.ucsd.edu. The Residence Life staff holds off-campus housing workshops during the winter quarter.
