Academic Advising & General Education Requirements
THE ACADEMIC ADVISING MISSION AT ERC
- Provide ERC students with the information and counseling they need to fulfill their academic and personal goals and requirements.
- Monitor compliance with the academic regulations of ERC, the University and the UC San Diego Academic Senate.
- Provide information and referrals to enable students to take advantage of other ERC and University resources and opportunities.
- Encourage and assist students in developing the personal responsibility, independence, confidence and skills that will enable them to succeed in their college careers and become knowledgeable, contributing citizens.
- Serve as the repository for academic records.
Where can my student go for Academic Advising?
Eleanor Roosevelt College students are advised by both ERC Academic Counselors and Advisors within their major department. ERC Counselors have general knowledge about major requirements and work with students to develop four-year plans which include ERC general education, university and major requirements. Students will work with advisors within their departments regarding specific major questions and requirements. The ERC Academic Advising office is located on the third floor of the ERC Administration Building. Students can also use the Virtual Advising Center to submit questions to ERC counselors 24 hours a day. Academic Department locations can be found on the UC San Diego website.
If my student was to get sick or needed to withdraw from classes, how does he or she do that and what does it mean for the future?
If your student feels that he or she will receive a “D” or “F” in a course, it is much better to withdraw from the course than risk affecting their GPA and possible academic probation. (A “W” or withdrawal grade is not calculated in the GPA). A student is allowed one “W” grade per course. Sometimes circumstances lead students to withdraw from all classes—withdrawing from the university. Students should always consult with ERC Advising before filing an application for withdrawal from a quarter. Also note that the student, not the parent, should submit the withdrawal paperwork. If a student gets a “D” or “F”, it will always be on the transcript even if the class is repeated. Students are allowed to repeat up to 16.0 units of “D” or “F” grades and have the new grade replace the “D” or “F” grade in the cumulative GPA.
Can parents access student grades?
According to the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and University policy, personal information, including grades, is considered private information available to the student only. As a result, the University is not permitted to disseminate this information to anyone but the student unless s/he signs a release form. Students are encouraged to discuss their academic performance with their parents and family members. Students can access their grades via TritonLink.
