Resident Advisor Application Page

Resident Advisors are integral to the success of new and continuing students' on-campus living experience at Eleanor Roosevelt College and International House. The job requires substantial effort, dedication and time.

Applicants are urged to read through the job description and responsibilities carefully before deciding to apply. Applications must be submitted online by deadline (announced in December). Deadlines will be closely adhered to, so please make sure all application materials are turned in on time.

NOTE: Students studying abroad during the 2010-2011 academic year should apply in the Spring for the 2011-2012 academic year. Please check this website in April 2010 for more information.


Resident Advisor Timeline

TUESDAY, 12/1 Intercultural Communication Workshop applications available. Workshop sessions will be held on Mondays (2/1, 2/8, 2/22, 3/1, 3/8) from 4:00-5:30. Note: RA candidates are strongly encouraged to participate in the Intercultural Communication Workshop.
TUESDAY, 12/1 Resident Advisor applications available online at http://reslifeapp.ucsd.edu.
THURSDAY, 1/7 Information session for applicants in the Middle Earth Lounge at 8:00 p.m. Attendance is strongly recommended.
FRIDAY, 1/15 RA Applications must be submitted online by 11:59pm. Late applications submitted after 1/15/2009 at 11:59pm will not be accepted.
TUESDAY, 1/19 Candidates will be contacted via their UCSD email if they are invited to continue on in the selection process. If you are invited to continue, you must sign up at the Residence Life Office for ONE of the group interview times. The ERC Office of Residence Life is open from 9:00am- noon, and 1-4:30pm.
THURSDAY, 1/28  

Group interviews. In this process, you will work within a team of RA candidates to complete two tasks.  A variety of staff members and student leaders from on campus will serve as observers. Group Interview sessions at 3:35pm OR 5:00pm in Middle Earth Lounge.

FRIDAY 1/29    Applications are also due for the Eleanor Roosevelt College Intercultural Communication Workshop. Please talk with a Resident Dean before Jan. 29 if a class conflict prevents you from participating.
FRIDAY, 1/29 Group Interview session @ 10:00am in Middle Earth Lounge.
MONDAY, 2/1 An email will be sent to all candidates at their UCSD email address informing them if they have progressed to the next round with instructions on signing up for the Individual interview.
MONDAY, 2/1   First Intercultural Communication Workshop. Attendance for ERC & I-House RA candidates is strongly recommended. Please talk with a Resident Dean before Jan. 29 if a class conflict prevents you from participating.
THURSDAY, 2/5 Individual interviews begin for selected candidates.  (NOTE: Students studying abroad during the 2010-2011 academic year should apply in the Spring for the 2011-2012 academic year. Please check online in April 2010 for more information.)
WEEK OF 3/16 Final selection letters are mailed.
MONDAY, 3/30 Written acceptance or non-acceptance of RA position or alternate status is due to the Office of Residence Life.
SPRING QTR.    There will be three required meetings for 2010-2011 Resident Advisors. They are: April 6 (7:30pm - 9:30 pm), April 20 (8:00 - 9:30 pm) and May 4 (8:00 - 9:30 pm).
MONDAY 8/30/2010 Training begins for Resident Advisors.
SUNDAY 6/13/2011 Resident Advisors move out of apartments and residence halls.

Resident Advisor Job Description

Eleanor Roosevelt College and International House Resident Advisor Specific Qualifications

  1. ERC RA applicants: Must attain at least sophomore standing (second year of college) by the beginning of Fall Quarter of the year for which you are applying. Junior standing preferred.
  2. I-House RA applicants:  Must attain at least junior standing (third year of college) by the beginning of Fall Quarter of the year for which you are applying.
  3. Have a cumulative and last quarter GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  4. Demonstrated leadership ability, interpersonal skills and an appreciation of student life at UCSD.
  5. Experienced in organizing group activities (e.g., in a residential setting or through organizations, clubs, etc.)
  6. Previous group living experience preferred.
  7. Participation in the ERC Intercultural Communication Workshop is strongly recommended. Workshop sessions will be held on (2/1, 2/8, 2/22, 3/1, 3/8).   Please talk with a Resident Dean before January 29 if a class conflict prevents you from participating.
  8. I-House RA applicants: International/multicultural life experience preferred.

Reference #1: A recent supervisor or advisor. A supervisor/advisor during high school is acceptable, but the most recent supervisor/advisor is preferred.

Reference #2: A peer who knows you well enough to comment on your potential as an RA. Current ERC Res Life Staff, including current RA's, may not be a reference for you.

References are not included in the online application. You will need to print them and bring them to your individual interview.
