First Year Orientation

Welcome to ERC and the UC San Diego family! We are excited to introduce you to campus opportunities, resources, and share what it means to be a Triton!

Your orientation experience will be made up of three components: an online Pre-Orientation component (COMPASS), additional videos and content as well as the chance to meet other incoming students in CANVAS (starting mid-August), as well as a live and interactive webinar. Together, these pieces will provide you with the knowledge and campus connection necessary to navigate your first year. All three components are mandatory for all incoming students.

Please note: To access both the COMPASS portal and register for the Live Orientation Webinar, you will need your PID and Single-Sign on password. Can't find your PID?

 

COMPASS Pre-Orientation

The mandatory Pre-Orientation portal, COMPASS, was designed to provide you with concrete and practical information that could be absorbed on your own time, at your own pace. We expect the full portal to take you between 1.5 - 2 hours to complete, though we suggest working in 20-30 minute increments.

Canvas

Mid-August, you will receive an email inviting you to create your Canvas account. You will use Canvas to communicate with your Orientation Leader, fellow Tritons in your Orientation Group, and to view valuable and timely content as we approach the Live Orientation Webinar in September. The more familiar you become with this platform, the better - as most (if not all) of your Fall Quarter courses will also be using this platform throughout the quarter. Be sure to check your email for the invitation to join Canvas!

 


Live Orientation Webinar

Mandatory orientation sessions, hosted live via webinar, will occur at the end of September. We require registration for these webinars as each session is designed to promote student connection. Therefore, space is limited.

All registrations and/or changes made after July 31 will incur a $25 late fee.

   

First Year Sessions

  • Session 1: Monday, September 21, 2020 1:30pm - 4:30pm PDT
  • Session 2: Thursday, September 24, 2020 9:00am - 12:00pm PDT
  • Session 3: Thursday, September 24, 2020 1:30pm - 4:30pm PDT
  • Session 4: Thursday, September 24, 2020 7:00pm - 10:00pm PDT*
*This session is designed for International Students in time zones 11 - 18 hours ahead of San Diego!

If you are a student athlete, please check with your coach prior to registering for Orientation to avoid conflicts with practice schedules. 

International and Out-of-State students, please note all times are listed in Pacific Daylight Time (UTC-7). Please be sure to convert times to your local time zone!

Webinar Orientation Session Agenda

  • Connect in small groups with other incoming students going through a similar transition
  • Meet your Orientation Leader and learn what it is like to be a student at ERC from current, experienced ERC students
  • Engage with Academic Advising staff in medium-sized groups and ask your burning academic questions

 

Prepare for your Webinar

  • Our live webinar will require stable internet connection, a primary personal device, a microphone and webcam (so we can see and hear you!).
  • Test your tech beforehand! Make sure your webcam properly picks up audio and video. Additionally, test your network connection strength before the webinar starts.
  • Make sure you download the Zoom app, prior to the webinar.
  • If at all possible, locate yourself in a quiet and private space without distractions so you can engage and connect with others on the webinar.

Tech Support Resources

  • If you experience issues with websites not loading, reset browser caches, try navigating to a website on a different browser, or opening up a private session (such as incognito mode).
  • Know the contact information to tech support, whether it is your internet provider (for home network related issues) or campus tech support (for UCSD related issues). For any technical issues with your UCSD account, email, or other services, contact campus ITS Self-service portal or by email at servicedesk@ucsd.edu, or by phone at (858) 246-4357.



Move-in Information for Students Living On Campus

Since both components of our orientation do not require in-person attendance, living on-campus and/or being near the UC San Diego campus is not necessary nor required for orientation. Please refer to your housing portal for all housing and move-in details. 

 


Orientation Fee

The cost per student is $100.00. This covers the cost of staff, technology, convocation, and giveaway items. All registrations and/or changes made after July 31 will incur a $25 late fee.

Payment for orientation will be collected in your first UC San Diego tuition bill. Fees will not be collected at time of registration.
