Ellie's Community Hub Online

Greetings ERC Students, most of you are unexpectedly settling into a new home base, either at home or in the residence halls. For all students, virtual interactions will replace face-to-face interactions. No matter how you look at it, this is an extraordinary social experiment and this page can help to provide you with resources.

Day 1- A Day in the Life (Living On/Off Campus)

Housing Update/Covid-19

Check the Return to Learn website or the Housing Portal for the most up to date information!

For more information about Student Mail Services, including how to track the progress of a package.

Check out The Zone for easy, affordable recipes!

Triton Cash is the university’s pre-paid spending program that is linked directly to your student ID and is especially convenient for commuting students, though those who live on campus will find it useful as well.

The Triton Food Pantry has a variety of dried goods, canned goods, and fresh produce available to students. Thanks to a partnership with the Student Sustainability Collective, the Triton Food Pantry is now able to make food aid accessible to those living off-campus as well through a Mobile Pantry!

There are so many options to get to and from campus, and to get around campus once you are there! Shuttles, Buses, vanpools, scooters, bikes, electric bikes, skateboards, Lyft credit, vehicles to rent by the hours, and so many more! UC San Diego is truly a wheel friendly campus, so feel free to your favorite method of personal transportation!

Day 2- Safety & Health

UC Police

Safety is a top priority here on campus and in fact, UC San Diego has the lowest crime statistics of any UC, just behind UC Merced. We have our own police station, which provides immediate assistance on campus with an average response time of less than 2 minutes! Also, there are long blue posts scattered across campus, which are a part of the lights, camera, action service where you push the button, the lights turn on, the cameras record, and the campus police are called to the location!

CSO Escorts

Now let’s say you were studying in Geisel until like 12am and you preferred not to walk home alone in the dark. UC San Diego also has CSOs, or Community Service officers, who can walk you anywhere from sundown to 4AM(PDT)! Though after 1AM(PDT) you may be escorted by a police officer instead. For more information about how to contact a CSO or even how to arrange for a repeated escort.

Triton Alert System

All students are automatically enrolled in Triton Alert System via email, which will send you notifications about any safety-related event occurring on campus. You can also receive these updates as SMS texts sent to your phone by adding your phone devices to the Student Triton Alert emergency notification portal which you can access.

Health insurance

All students are automatically enrolled in the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) as part of their registration process. This plan helps to cover services provided at both the UCSD Student Health Services (SHS) as well as in-network off-campus services. Students with other insurance that meet UC waiver criteria are able to opt-out of UCShip by submitting a health fee waiver. If you plan to waive ship, it is encouraged that you consider enrolling in RAFT (Reduced Access Fee for Tritons) which provides inexpensive medical care at the Student Health Service Center for students who waive SHIP.

Getting Care

Students have multiple facets through which they can access medical care at the Student Health Services Center. For urgent care, students are able to be seen on a walk-in basis during the centers open hours of operation, or schedule a video appointment. After hours, the Nurse Advice Line is available, which will connect you with a registered nurse who can help you determine the next steps. Students are also able to schedule appointments virtually or in person, or utilize an online tool to ask nurses questions if they’re not sure of the proper course of action to take! For more information on how to access all of these wonderful resources and more, including access to testing for COVID-19, see the link in the title.

Return to Learn

Return to Learn Program: UC San Diego has launched a new program to make COVID-19 testing and tracing widely available. UC San Diego’s Return to Learn Program aims to broadly test students, faculty, and staff on campus on a recurring basis for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. This evidence-based program, which includes plans for contact tracing and isolation housing for on-campus resident students who test positive for the virus, is intended to better position UC San Diego to resume in-person activities when fall classes begin in September 2020.

Wellness Resources

There are various wellness resources to help students not only to make sure they're maintaining mental health but also to help better cope with stressors that arise from being college students. The first of these resources is called Counseling and Psychological Services, or CAPS. This is a free and confidential resource that provides individuals, groups, couples, and family psychotherapy to all registered students. These resources remain available to students in the time of COVID-19, appointments now will just take place on the phone or through video chat instead!

Now for The Zone! Located in Price Center, the Zone is a lounge space that also offers programs such as Yoga classes, therapy dogs, healthy cooking demonstrations, and many more to promote healthy, balanced living for UCSD students. Between programs, students are welcome and encouraged to stop by and take a nap, have a nice cup of tea, study, or do whatever! Additionally, the Zone has adapted their programming and will continue to so that it's still available to students virtually. For example, you can take yoga classes at 10AM(PDT) on Monday mornings!

Day 3- Classes & Academics

Academic Support Services

UCSD offers a number of Academic Support Services that are available for you to utilize whenever a little extra academic help is needed! The Teaching and Learning Commons is comprised of six different hubs which range form offering content tutoring, to supplemental instruction sections for specific classes, to tutoring opportunities for students to experiential learning opportunities for students! Each of these programs, and many more, are now offered virtually. - Also, the UCSD writing hub is part of the TLC and focuses on improving students' ability to write as a means of enhancing learning and increasing and demonstrating knowledge in some field. The Writing Hub offers one on one tutoring for students with a highly trained peer tutor online which students can choose to partake in either asynchronously or synchronously, a choice which you can make upon scheduling an appointment with the hub. Additionally, virtual writing workshops are available to students. - The Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services, OASIS, works to support first-generation college students, students from under-resourced communities, and underrepresented students, through a wide range of programs including tutoring services in select undergraduate math, science and language arts courses and 1-1 mentor sessions by appointment.
