Family Orientation

Family orientation is an opportunity to welcome parents to the ERC and the greater campus community and to initiate relationships involving parents, the University, and the College supportive of students' needs.

Our family orientation program also provides information that can assist the family with academic and social transitions including:

  • The college system and UC San Diego's educational expectations
  • Information about student development and anticipated evolution of the parent-student relationship
  • Availability of student services and support networks for students
  • Introduction to college staff and campus contacts
  • Awareness of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Parent/Family Program is a mirror image program to your Students Orientation Session.  This means that there will be times in which Parent/Family Members will be in the same room as the students, listening to the same material, however parents and students will be seated in different sections of the room.  There will be times in which students will be in a different room listening to a different presentation than the Parent/Family members.  There will be information more pertinent to parent/family members as well as information specific to students that we will have done in different locations.  Other than that, a large portion of the Parent/Family Orientation and the Student Orientation is held together.

To Register for a Parent/Family Orientation Session:

FIRST: Your student must register for their Orientation Session and will then be able to send you an invitation email.  The invitation does not require you to sign up, but gives you the information on how to register should you want to join us.  If you are interested in receiving this invitation please make sure to communicate with your student so that they know which E-Mail address is best to send your invitation to.

SECOND:  Follow the link on the invitation Email to the Website where you can register and pay for the orientation session.

*Please note - simply receiving the E-Mail Invitation DOES NOT mean you are registered for Orientation nor does it guarantee you a space in the session.  You must sign up and pay for the Family Orientation Session separately.

**Because of our increase in numbers, limited room sizes and our desire to accommodate as many families as possible there is a limit of 1 parent/family member and/or guardian per ERC student.  We wish we could accommodate every individual who would like to attend - we really appreciate your understanding.  Should space be available to allow registration of an additional person we will notify everyone via email.
