An Overview of Eleanor Roosevelt College

Founded in 1988 as UCSD's fifth undergraduate college, in 1994 Eleanor Roosevelt College was named in honor of the former First Lady, delegate to the United Nations, chair of the United Nations Commission on Human rights, chair of President Kennedy's Commission on the Status of Women, and member of the first Peace Corps Advisory Council.

ERC currently enrolls more than 3,300 undergraduate men and women. In Fall 2003 we moved the college into new facilities designed especially for ERC by eminent international architect Moshe Safdie.

ERC Provost Ann Craig serves as chief administrative and academic officer. She also holds an appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science. The ERC Dean of Academic Advising is Dr. Nancy Friedlander, and our Dean of Student Life is Patricia Scott.

Each administrative unit of the college has a role in fulfilling the overall mission of the college. Click here to understand the role of academic advising. The ways in which the ERC Student Affairs staff contribute to student life can be found here.

ERC's Educational Philosophy will affect your college experience and your future in many positive ways. Roosevelt students develop an unusually strong sense of community as they complete the core curriculum course sequence, The Making of the Modern World (MMW). Their academic work is further shaped by the requirements of departmental majors, which they select from among than 100 majors available at UCSD. About a quarter of each Roosevelt entering class spends some time studying or working abroad.
