Who Teaches the Class?

Instructors for the course are alumni from Math for America San Diego's five-year Fellowship Program for exemplary new and experienced secondary school mathematics teachers in San Diego County. MfA SD Teaching Fellows are teachers in area schools who are distinguished within their field and have received a variety of awards and commendations.

ERC 89 2023 Instructor - Trang Vu

Trang Vu has been teaching middle school and high school mathematics in San Diego for nearly 30 years. She graduated from UCSD Revelle College with a B.A. degree in Applied Math in 1987 and a M.A. degree in Curriculum Design in 1989. For five years, Mrs. Vu served as a Math for America (MfA) San Diego Noyce Master Teaching Fellow, and has taught ERC 89 with other MfA master teacher fellows from its inception. After graduating from UCSD, she worked as a coordinator for the UCSD Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), designing math & science tutorials and tutor training programs. She has taught math in several academic support programs including Upward Bound, TRIO programs, UCSD OASIS Summer Bridge, Summer Academy, and AVID. She received the Museum of Math’s 2013 Rosenthal Prize for Innovation and Inspiration in Math Teaching and a teaching award from Mental Floss magazine in 2016. Last year, she also served as the assistant director for the Discrete Math Project Collaborative at SDSU, co-writing a Discrete Math curriculum aimed at preparing students for college math and supporting teachers at Sweetwater Union High School District to pilot the curriculum. Currently, she has resumed teaching at La Jolla High School where she has worked in the past 18 years. She loves teaching and learning, has high expectations for her students, and provides them with a lot of support.
