Welcome

Welcome to the Eleanor Roosevelt College community! For our students and their families, the next four years will be an exhilarating combination of challenges, choices and opportunities supported by a strong community. We look forward to getting to know you.

Challenges abound. Exciting academic programs in departments and the college will challenge students to develop new knowledge and skills. Living with suite-mates or apartment- mates, cultivating a network of new friends, and expanding their leadership and service skills are among the challenges they will encounter outside the classroom.

Students grow by making choices and taking advantage of opportunities. UC San Diego encourages students to be thoughtful about the academic and personal choices that they make. We support them as they select a major, learn time management, seek out support services, and make responsible decisions as members of our college community. They explore co-curricular and recreational activities in their first year, but soon discover other opportunities such as on-campus employment, internships, and study abroad.

Communities cushion challenges and change. We urge students to become active members of a community at UC San Diego – beginning in the College. Communities of belonging give students a support network to share challenges, discuss choices, and discover opportunities. Investment in a community pays off in academic success and social adjustment.

College programs provide a foundation for the future. By inviting students to explore subjects outside their major specialization, ERC’s general education program will add value to your son or daughter’s degree. In ERC’s program, stu-dents have choices within a framework that ensures that they become well-rounded college graduates. In addition to expanding their knowledge in a variety of fields, they will develop critical thinking, communication, and analytic skills.

The Making of the Modern World (MMW) core sequence combines the standard requirement of humanities and social sciences with the University’s writing requirement. Our goal is to prepare students for reasoned, sustained discourse and carefully supported written argument about the world beyond their home communities. These skills are transferable, preparing students to do their best work in other courses, and later in their places of work or graduate programs.

This generation’s future is absolutely linked to the world beyond California and U.S. borders. Occupational choices will be shaped by changes in the world economy. Workplaces and neighborhoods change as immigrants from around the world join our communities. Whatever their chosen profession, our graduates will work and live in multicultural environments. Graduates who can be effective in these environments will have advancement opportunities.

At Eleanor Roosevelt College, we appreciate the opportunity to work with young adults as they explore what it means to be a college student. We look forward to getting to know your family in the years ahead.

What is a Liberal Arts Education?

The Liberal Arts are defined as studies intended to provide general knowledge and intellectual skills rather than job training. A 2,500-year tradition that originated in response to questions about the nature of being human and the search for truth about the place of humanity in the universe, liberal studies are vital for one’s intellectual and personal development and as a broad foundation for future careers. At UC San Diego the general education curriculum at each college is designed to reflect the importance of a liberal arts education, as well as the philosophical emphasis of the particular college. A bachelor’s degree in any major at UC San Diego is considered a liberal arts degree.
