Families of the Class of 2013

Summer 2009

The summer months are full of planning and anticipation of the transition your family and our new student will experience. We encourage students who were able to attend June orientation to be in touch with each other through Facebook, email, and telephone. It’s one of the best ways to build confidence for the move to UCSD. Students who will be attending September orientations may choose to meet through social networking sites such as one of the Facebook groups either for Eleanor Roosevelt College or UC San Diego.

The Eleanor Roosevelt College Academic Advising staff will be communicating electronically with ALL new students over the summer. New students should develop the habit of regularly checking their UCSD email accounts for messages from Advising in preparation for enrollment. Students will be able to view our counselors’ suggestions for enrollment in specific classes or general categories of classes (“e.g., fine arts class”) beginning on August 17.  The date is driven by when the finalized Advanced Placement scores are submitted to UC San Diego and available online as part of students’ records.

In the meantime, students can consult the resources they learned about in various orientation presentations including the Tips for Tritons session. (We will be in touch via email with students who plan to attend orientation in September.) As a handy tool, students can access and the Hand-e-book (http://roosevelt.ucsd.edu/about/handebook.html ). Toward the bottom of the same page there are numerous links to resources for family members. For students who will be living on-campus, the Residence Life website has very useful information on the Frequently Asked Questions page (http://roosevelt.ucsd.edu/res-life/faqs.html )

Students who attended a June orientation session have received a bookmark listing the important upcoming deadlines. The bookmark is attached to a colorful refrigerator magnet. The same information will be mailed to students in September orientation. We hope your family will keep it, and our website, handy for future reference.

As a parent, I appreciate that the summer between high school graduation and the beginning of college can be exhilarating for students and a sentimental time for families. I hope the next three months are a joyful time for your family. I look forward to seeing you in the fall either at move-in or at the all-college UCSD Family Weekend, October 23-25.
