Mary~ Singapore

I am a junior Ethnic Studies major. I enjoy learning, conferencing, baking from the box, cranium, orange juice with pulp, and doing B&W photography. I chose Singapore because it is known as the only “first world” country in Southeast Asia. I’m not much of a history person, but I do want to see how Singapore, which was once a colony of the British (who wasn’t?), has been able to transfer itself into a cultural and economic hub with four national languages. Singapore is also relatively close to Cambodia, which is where my parents are from. You should read my journal because I would like to think that I am a very dynamic and fascinating person; plus it’s my first time out of the country so you can read about how I will eventually get over my butterflies while abroad!

Margaret~ Spain

As I approached my senior year as a double major in International Studies and Sociology with a minor in Urban Studies and Planning, it became very clear that with studies such as these I needed to study abroad! What better country than Spain for me to further my studies and improve my language skills. I am excited to explore Spanish culture and try the food! In Spain, I am most likely to be found walking around admiring the architecture, wandering the art galleries, or down by the beach, so stay tuned to all of my adventures!

Sherilyn~ United Kingdom & France

I am a second year international studies major concentrating in economics and sociology with a minor in French studies. I am studying abroad under the world-renowned professors of Pembroke College-Cambridge University in the UK because I love British culture and wanted to experience it away from the crowds of tourists usually found in London. After Pembroke, I am moving on to the University of Bordeaux in France. I have been studying French for eight years and want to immerse myself in the language, culture and people; something I couldn't possibly do at UCSD. I know that I will not only grow as a person, but that this experience will shape my future lifestyle, education and career choices.

Shian~ China

This is my senior year at UCSD and I figured since I am an International Studies major and ethnically Cantonese, there is no better way to finish out my college experience than to study abroad in China. I don’t just get to learn about my roots, I get to live in them. I expect this to be a fun, challenging, life changing experience and I hope you enjoy coming along for the ride!

Nicola~ France

Students

Faina~ Tanzania

I am a second year at ERC and am studying Mechanical Engineering and International Studies. I am very interested in World Politics, I love to smile and make things, and my favorite form of procrastination is reading. This summer I traveled to Arusha, Tanzania
to volunteer with a local NGO. I learned a lot, and the expirience is one I will never forget. Enjoy reading about it in my blog!

Kevin~ Egypt

I am a second year Linguistics Major and already studying abroad! I am studying at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. During my time at UCSD, I have participated in the CALPIRG New Voters Campaign, ERC-TV, and the Dancesport Ballroom Dance Team.  I have also been studying Arabic through the Linguistics program and an intensive summer course in Arabic at UCLA. In addition to the great opportunity of learning Arabic, Egypt is a wealth of culture and history.  From scuba diving in the Red Sea to taking a bus to Mt. Sinai and seeing the Pyramids and the Sphinx on Camelback, there is no end to the opportunities offered by Egypt's over 4500 year history. I want to gain a greater understanding of diverse people from all over the world through this life changing adventure.

Laura~ Netherlands

I'm a Sophomore International Studies-Linguistics major this year and am attending Utrecht University, in the Netherlands to study Dutch and European culture. I have traveled to Holland multiple times with my family and am excited to finally go there alone and see everything from a college student's perspective. My class will be taking a trip to Brussels, a city I've always wanted to see. I only know a little Dutch but I can't wait to try it out with the other students, most of whom are international, so my dorm will be another cultural experience! Enjoy my blog, and I will hopefully see some of you all at the Dutch conversation table in the fall at Café Ventanas!

Nhan~ India

I am a Senior Biochemistry/Cell Biology major studying in Darjeeling, India. This region is comprised mainly of a Nepalese population, so I will be learning Nepalese and regional Nepal Studies. I am interested in public health and while in India will be completing a research project in it. I am most excited yet nervous about is the host family stay because I will be fully immersed in the Nepalese culture by living and interacting with the people but I have never spoken a Nepalese word in my life. This will be my first experience abroad and I only hope that I come back a changed and better person with plenty of amazing experiences and stories to tell.

James~ Mexico & Spain

I am a senior this year and I will leave college in style by exploring the Spanish speaking world (or at least a part of it). I enjoy surfing and camping, and I love to travel! I am finishing up my studies in International Studies, Spanish and Portuguese and thought I would get a different perspective on them in Mexico and then Spain.

Let Us introduce ourselves… We are this year’s recipients of the Eleanor Roosevelt College Study Abroad Scholarship for the 2007-2008 school year!

I have always planned to study in France, and have always loved the French culture and language. I will be studying in Lyon at both IEP Lyon, a small political science university, and at the much larger Lyon 2 which works perfectly with my degree in political science and my French literature minor. As a British citizen, studying in Europe has personal meaning for me, because I have spent half of my life there. After living in International House for the past year, I am excited to become an international student myself and experience life in another country. I believe that learning about other places and cultures is not only interesting, but also an important step to becoming a well-rounded, open-minded person.
