Language Requirement

 
Students are required to demonstrate basic conversational and reading proficiency in a modern foreign language, or advanced reading proficiency in a classical language. The requirement may be satisfied by:
  1. Completion of a fourth quarter of language course (or third semester or equivalent elsewhere). Classes may be taken for a letter grade or P/NP. Self-directed language study (Linguistics 19) may NOT be used to satisfy this requirement.
  2. Passing a standardized language proficiency exam in French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish. Click for Exam Dates.
  3. Passing an individually arranged language proficiency exam in languages other than those listed above see: http://ling.ucsd.edu/language/proficiency-exam.html for a list of testers and instructions.
  4. Earning a qualifying AP or IB score.
  5. Earning a score of 700 or higher on SAT II Language exam OR attending high school taught in a language other than English outside the U.S. Please see ERC Academic Advising for a waiver form.

Note: To be eligible for Phi Beta Kappa Honors, one year of college-level study, or demonstrated proficiency in a language other than English, is required.

Reminder: students may not overlap courses between GE requirements.  This includes language courses used as pre-requisites to the fourth quarter of a language course.
